PLC open is doing great work in getting different vendors to come closer to the holy grail of allowing code written on one brand of PLCs to run on another. Don't hold your breath on this outcome but in the meantime, IEC61131-3 is changing the way PLCs are programmed. http://www.plcopen.org/
Telemecanique (part of Schneider) make great PLCs. This link is to Telemecanique's site which is an excellent place to get info on their huge product range. http://www.telemecanique.com/en/index.htm
You could not think of PLCs without AB. Rock solid gear at a price that is not for the faint hearted. Their PAC range is what we really like. These are the controllers programmable in the five IEC61131-3 languages using RSLogix 5000. http://www.ab.com/programmablecontrol/pac/
Speaking of PACs, we think that NI have some really well designed industrial hardware. This is gear that compares with AB in terms of toughness and we think they definitely have a place in the market. They are programmed with Labview. http://www.ni.com/pac/
